I have been active in sports either playing, coaching and officiating his entire life. Later in life he got into long distance running (5 kms up to the Marathon), including running major marathons like Boston, Chicago, London and New York.
In 2013, he got into coaching the varsity cross country and indoor track teams at Centennial College, leading the men placing 3rd in Ontario and 7th in Canada in 2015.
The Indoor track teams dominated the Ontario College indoor meets in 2014 and 2015, winning both the Centennial and George Brown Invitationals.
In the summer of 2013, while cycling with another long distance runner colleague, they discussed their mutual interest in cycling across the country. That was the initial idea for Bike for Kids, which became a reality in 2017. Bike for Kids (@bikeforkidsto), which comprised of Sean and Nir Meltzer, was a charity cycling adventure from Vancouver to St. Johns, covering over 6600 kms in 49 days. The Hospital for Sick Kids and the Meagan Bebenek Foundation (for paediatric brain tumour research) was chosen as the charity of choice for Bike for Kids. Starting in 2017, Sean and Nir have held a spinathon or group charity ride every year and have raised about $300,000 to date.
Sean retired from a long career in post-secondary education administration in 2012. He now coaches adult long distance runners through his Run Strong program, with runners regularly achieving new personal bests and or Age Group podium finishes as well as spending time with family and his grandchildren
